The Multiplier Programme
What is the multiplier programme?
The Teachers CAN Multiplier Programme forms part of the organisation’s overall mission to grow a network of young teachers and allies committed to ensuring that every child in South Africa receives a quality education. The programme capacitates and trains teachers (lead multipliers) to lead Local Connect Zones, which are spaces where young teachers and their allies (seasoned teachers and ecosystem stakeholders) who see themselves as change agents, develop this identity, and are part of a community of like-minded individuals. The community is guided by the Teachers CAN vision for (young) teachers to be seen as vital role players in influencing the education ecosystem, and the Teachers CAN manifesto, which outlines five core values that can enable young teachers to tap into their individual and collective agency. The manifesto states that teachers should be able to:
- Support learners to reach their potential in all aspects of their lives.
- Engage as equals and for equality in schools.
- Innovate and own school-wide teaching practices.
- Play an active role in school structures.
- Connect to a wider world of social change.
The Teachers CAN Multiplier Programme focuses on supporting up to 20 teachers each year. .
The one-year programme has the following components: Training: Training the lead multipliers to lead Local Connect Zones in their communities. Training takes place during the March public school holidays. Reflections and Peer Learning: Online monthly gatherings intended as opportunities for growth, reflection, and learning from fellow lead multipliers. Mid-year and year-end Reflections: In-person reflections to take place in the June and September public school holidays. Network building: Lead multipliers will have an opportunity to engage with the wider network through various platforms where they can put into practice their learning and further embed their identity as key role players in the eco-system.
While the duration of the Teachers CAN Multiplier Programme has been designed as a one-year programme, lead multipliers and multipliers will have the opportunity to engage in a vibrant alumni community and broader network post the year. All components of the Multiplier Programme aim to help teachers develop a common identity rooted in professionalism, creativity, and disruption of the status quo. The Multiplier Programme seeks to provide multipliers with a stimulating and nurturing environment rooted in the belief that each one of them has the potential to make a difference in the education system. The Local Connect Zone gatherings help the community make meaning of the manifesto based on their context and serve as an activation space where they work together towards making each value come alive in their respective schools.
