What happens when the fellowship ends?

The fellowship programme runs for 12 months. However, as an alumnus, you will continue to play an integral role in the network and future fellowships.

As an alumnus of the Teachers CAN fellowship programme, there will be opportunities to engage in the broader network, participating in Teachers CAN events as well as helping drive the growth and mobilisation of the network.

If the immersions are happening in my province or town, can I travel to the immersions daily?

No, these will be residential immersions where all fellows are expected to be staying at the arranged venue.

What are the out-of-pocket expenses I can expect?

Out-of-pocket expenses include transport to the most convenient airport when out-of-province. Transport to the pick-up spot when the immersion is in your local province. Any meals not provided by the programme.

What costs are covered?

Economy-class flights for out-of-province fellows. Where an economy-class flight route is not possible, the fellow will be provided with a bus ticket from their province. Accommodation and meals. Shuttle from designated pick-up spots to the venue for in-province fellows.

Where will the immersions be held?

The immersions will be held in Johannesburg or Cape Town. This will be confirmed closer to the start of the fellowship.

Can I leave early if I have scheduling conflicts during an immersion?

No, there is no substitute for your presence at immersions. Participation is mandatory for all required programme activities. As a fellow, you are expected to be on time for each session and to be present for the duration of the immersion.

There are three immersions over 12 months taking place in the March, June, and September public school holidays.

No, applications are not reviewed until after the application deadline. Applying earlier will not affect the outcome of your application as they will all be reviewed together.

How will the COVID-19 pandemic affect the Teachers CAN fellowship programme?

Depending on the health circumstances in South Africa, and government guidance in 2022, the fellowship may be run via a home-based online arrangement.

Can I bring my spouse and/or family with me to the immersions?

We strongly encourage you to consider your family as you make the decision to apply for this fellowship. Fellows are strongly discouraged from bringing their family or spouse with them to the immersions as full attention will be required to benefit holistically from the fellowship.

Yes, the applications are open to all teachers teaching in South Africa regardless of nationality.

What happens if I fall ill?

In the case of absence due to illness, unavoidable travel or family crisis, Teachers CAN must be informed well in advance and prior to the start of the immersion. Decisions on how to proceed will be made on a case-by-case basis.

If I am accepted to the fellowship, can I defer my participation until the following year?

No, you cannot defer your application. If you are no longer able to participate in the programme in 2022, you would have to apply again for the fellowship in 2023.

The application form will auto-generate a receipt and send a copy of your responses to the e-mail address you used. This will be your confirmation.

No, you can only submit your application once. If you resend your application, the first application to be received will be assessed.
