Building a Generative Community

When I hear the word “generative,” it evokes images of something dynamic, life-giving, and multidimensional. It suggests a space that is supportive, positive, and reciprocal. As we explore the concept of a generative community at Teachers CAN, these same qualities come to mind. I envision change agent teachers and allies who are active, intentional participants who come together to contribute meaningfully to this shared space.

Building a generative community means surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals and communities that support our vision. It requires us to define and articulate that vision clearly and to hone our storytelling skills so that we can attract those who are aligned with our goals. This theme resonates deeply with the age-old African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The essence of generative communities lies in this collective journey—where shared vision and values allow us to leverage each other’s strengths, embrace diversity, and cultivate an inclusive environment where we can flourish individually and collectively.

As individuals, it’s challenging to stay anchored and focused without a clear sense of our values. When we come together with others, undefined values can make it difficult to form authentic and sustainable connections. This theme, therefore, challenges us to continuously reflect on our values—starting within ourselves and extending to the spaces we inhabit and choose to create.

At Teachers CAN, our common vision is to elevate the role of teachers within the education ecosystem. We achieve this by connecting teachers, amplifying their voices, and elevating the teaching profession. Our shared values include creating safe spaces, fostering inclusivity, being solutions-oriented, practising empathy, committing to lifelong learning, engaging as equals, and prioritizing growth and professional development.

Our Teachers CAN Manifesto aligns well with this theme. A generative community, as reflected in our manifesto, supports others in reaching their full potential, promotes equality and innovation, and fosters a sense of ownership among its members. Those who are part of it play active roles and remain connected to a wider world of social change. This connection to the wider world of social change is crucial as we strive to be generative and drive positive change. It’s about bringing others along, sharing the load, and sustaining our change agent identity.

This exciting theme calls us all into our individual and collective agency. It encourages us to give as much as we receive, and to view ourselves and those around us through a lens of abundance—focusing on what we have to offer rather than what we lack. By doing so, we spur ourselves into growth and development, taking the necessary actions to lead and drive positive change in our spheres of influence.
