I am Gugu Priscilla Xulu, an innovative class manager with 13 years of experience teaching mathematics to primary school learners in grades 4-7. My passion for teaching has been evident since childhood, and it is the driving force behind my career as an educator. Throughout my studies, I dedicated my weekends to teaching other children and volunteered for two years in my local area, specifically within the INTERSEN phase. I did this work without financial compensation, motivated solely by a desire to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives. My vision is to instil and facilitate effective teaching and learning methods that empower learners with the skills, values, and attitudes necessary to succeed in our rapidly changing world.
We live in an era shaped by rapidly evolving technology. My goal as a teacher is to inspire and uplift learners who are growing up in disadvantaged communities, many of whom face challenges such as poverty, parental absence, abuse, and a lack of love and support. I am committed to driving positive change because I firmly believe that education is the most powerful tool for success. However, it is not just any education, but the delivery of quality, equitable education to all children, regardless of race, culture, or background, that matters most.
I currently serve as the chairperson of the Teacher-to-Teacher Programme, where professional educators collaborate to empower one another and share strategies for improving teaching and learning in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Fostering strong, well-equipped teachers within my community can have a profoundly positive impact.
I live in a community facing high rates of teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, crime, and unemployment. By implementing our programme, we aim to keep learners engaged with their education and provide them with better opportunities. My commitment to continuous professional development enables me to empower other educators. My greatest achievement is seeing former learners, many of whom come from my classroom, now excelling at university and producing outstanding matric results.
