Zinhle Mthembu

My name is Zinhle Emmaculate Mthembu, and I’m a passionate teacher at Freedom Park Secondary School in Soweto. I hold an Honours degree in Bachelor of Education, and I became a teacher not just to educate, but to inspire. For me, teaching is more than a job; it’s a calling to change lives, shift mindsets, and help young people see beyond their circumstances.

I chose this path because I’ve seen firsthand how one committed teacher can make a lifelong impact. I come from a background where hope wasn’t always visible, and I promised myself I’d be the kind of teacher who brings that hope into every classroom. I believe education is the most powerful tool to break cycles, unlock potential, and reimagine what’s possible.

I’m deeply passionate about building a sense of community among teachers. Teaching can sometimes feel isolating, but I believe that when we collaborate, share ideas, and support one another, we create a more vibrant, joyful, and effective education system. I want to be part of a network that uplifts teachers; where we are seen, heard, and empowered.

My areas of interest in education include learner empowerment, leadership development, mental wellness, and values-driven teaching. My dream is to see every child in South Africa; regardless of where they come from; have access to quality education, caring teachers, and schools that feel like home. I want our learners to grow up believing in their worth and equipped to lead with purpose.

If I had to name my superpower, it would be hope. I carry it with me into every lesson, every challenge, and every learner interaction. Whether a learner is facing doubt, trauma, or hardship, I do my best to plant a seed of belief; that they are capable, seen, and destined for more. Teaching, for me, is a daily act of transformation.
