The quality of education in South Africa through the eyes of parents.
Parents have a unique role to play in the education of their children as they are the first educators their children encounter. Parents also have a unique role to play as advocates for their children’s rights, enshrined in the South African Constitution. These rights include the right to human dignity, freedom of environment and the specific protective rights that children have. For this reason, parents need to feel empowered, and have sufficient knowledge about what is happening in schools to advocate for their children. Parent Power refers to this as “knowledge for action”. We believe that knowledge is not just about information, but also about identity-building. By listening and learning from parents, we are also empowering them to see themselves as agents of change in their communities. This is why we place a strong emphasis on building knowledge in the hands of parents.
