Omphemetse Masilo

My name is Omphemetse Masilo. A successful 28 year old teacher who has been in the profession for six amazing years. When I was 10 years old, my class teacher noticed that I was struggling with English language skills. She took me under her wing and every day for about three months, she stayed after school with me and used fun activities to help me grasp language skills. By the end of grade 12, my English marks were so good on my certificate that I decided to further my studies in education, majoring in English and Mathematics. I have never forgotten the passion, love, and patience my teacher had in making me the amazing English-speaking adult I am today. This inspired me to become a teacher and make the same difference in the lives of children.

In this day and age, it is difficult to find young teachers who are motivated to excel in the profession. I believe that a change agent like me can bring teachers together to share good practices that can make schooling progressive and innovative. Within a community of teachers, I can provide support for the daily challenges faced and bring positive energy to our schooling environments to create excitement for the profession.

My vision as a young teacher is to inspire other young people to enter the profession out of love, not as a last resort. I also aim to ensure that quality education is provided to all learners, regardless of their socio-economic background. My superpower is my voice; it is empowering to walk into a room, have people doubt me because of my size, and then use my voice to be heard and make a change.
