I was born and raised in a very poor family background, so I don’t want to see any child experience what I have gone through. The education profession is the best-suited career for me because I will have the opportunity to groom and develop Children holistically in our communiThe best way to eradicate poverty in our communities is largely through education, where skills and opportunities are given. I chose to major in Primary School Education, Grades 4-6, where I believe a strong foundation for future learning is essential.
I became a teacher to educate, change situations, and be a role model and also to be a testimony to someone who might be facing domestic problems that, despite facing odds and family circumstances, you can still make it in life. Also, I was inspired by my High School educators who have made me admire the teaching profession. The way they cared for me and mentored me had a big influence on me. I am in the teaching profession to develop learners, grow my teaching identity, and contribute to innovation to make humanity great. I honour the huge responsibility entrusted to my abilities to teach children before my eyes 7 hours every day. I am driven every day by this statement: “Be the kind of teacher you would want for your own kids”.
I would like to see an education system that caters for all varieties of learners with different abilities. The current education system is designed in such a way that forces everyone to comply or fail. The system is too general. COVID-19 has shown us that innovations in education have shortcomings; this largely affects schools in townships. I want to form a community of practice for other educators in my hometown because I believe we can always share information, share resources and strategies concerning our teaching profession. When teachers come together as a group to share frustrations and challenges, solutions will also come from the same teachers who are on the ground and classroom-based daily.
